About the author

Who am I?

My name is Judit Halin. I am a professional consultant with a great interest in the field of business communication. I live in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada with my husband Ariel and daughter Leah.

My connection to writing

Writing plays a very important role in my life, both personal and professional. I spend most of my working hours producing and reviewing documents. My friends and family rely on me for composing their letters, proofreading their essays, and helping them script important presentations, speeches, and voicemails.

Having worked for years in consulting, which is one of the most communication-intensive career fields, I’ve accumulated considerable practical experience and knowledge of business writing. Prior to becoming an independent consultant, I spent a few years working for one of the “big four” accounting and consulting firms, where I had the opportunity to learn from the best professionals in the industry, and was exposed to a wide variety of communication requirements and styles.

I truly believe that the ability to communicate with people effectively, both verbally and in writing, is one of the top three skills required for success in career and life. This is why I am constantly looking for opportunities to learn more about interpersonal and business communication. Let’s learn together!

Why blog?

Blogging gives me an opportunity to write on my terms, share my knowledge, and learn from others. I aspire to excite my readers (you!) and motivate them to improve.

May 26, 2010

Today I received an email containing documentation for an important meeting scheduled to take place later this week. I was about to print one of the documents, an Excel workbook, and decided to “print preview” it first, and good thing I did – it was not set for print.

So, muttering “is it too much to ask?”, I began to:
-        format the tables to make them reader-friendly,
-        adjust layout, paper size, % of normal, and margins for optimal fit of the content on a page,
-        insert header and footer (sheet name & page number),
-        set “header row repeat”.
